ARTIST STATEMENT - FLORAL COMPOSITIONS
Quite simply, I inherited the spirit of my culture and art forms in a way that cannot be explained in words. My education in Ukraine encompassed studies of our traditional realistic styles, including patterning and floral motifs. I visited working factories where these motifs are meticulously painted on porcelain, as well as museum collections of Ukrainian folk art. Whether collaging flowers, fabrics, and crochet or painting the embroidered floral motifs of my native Ukraine, in my art, I explore the role of folk and craft elements.
These floral compositions are also my personal response to worldwide warfare, well as a tribute to the role of women in the cultural identity of my birthplace. I believe that if more people became sensitive to the beauty of nature and art, the less violence there would be in the world.
